Turning a Black Bird Blue

If I Were Blue, 2019, 25″ x 30″, SOLD

If I Were Blue is included in Yosemite Renaissance 35!

The exhibit opens at Yosemite Museum February 21, 2020 from 5:30 to 7:30 and will be displayed February 22, 2020 to May 3, 2020. Then the exhibit travels to other galleries.

This may be a raven judging by the curvature and thickness of his beak apparent in my photos. He had a glint of blue on his back.

I’ve been mulling over these photos for several years, thinking about ways to fade the background and layer fabric onto the branches and bird. At the same time I was reading naturalist Bernd Heinrich’s fascinating descriptions of ravens’ playful intelligent behaviors in Mind of the Raven and other titles.

So last year this all merged when I found a blue fabric and assigned a thought (and a bluer hue) to this black bird in Yosemite. It is the only piece I produced last year because of a torn hip muscle. I am honored.
